Remember Me
It seems like this guy doesn't get that much face time on the blog, but he's still here and cute as ever!

Party Weekend
Most people probably aren't too interested in the specifics of Seth's birthday celebration, but for the sake of my family journal here we go.

Seth spent his actual birthday night at the father/son overnighter. He was so excited about it. I bought a huge sheet cake and sent it so everyone could sing to him. The pic is from a phone, but it's still cute. Every last piece was gone.

The boys had fun even though it poured rain all night. The next day we set the tent back up to air out, so this is my only record of the trip.

Sunday afternoon we had a small family party for Seth. He was so excited about having "two birthdays." The theme was Toy Story, but I didn't even attempt a cake. Instead I bought the Toy Story bucket of soliders, and we made cupcakes. There were 72 little guys in that bucket, and the boys have played with them a lot.

I really slacked on taking pictures and hardly got any of Seth let alone our family, but we're so grateful to grandmas and grandpas and TJ and Amy's family for coming and making it so fun. Our big present to Seth was this helmet so he can ride the 4-wheeler and motorcycle with Jer. The bike helmet just doesn't cut it. He's pretty excited about it. Now he just wishes he had his own ride. Our neighbor bought their little boy a real motorcycle and Seth seriously covets it. Maybe when he's older...maybe.

Happy Birthday Seth
Friday was Seth's birthday, and we've been celebrating all weekend. He is three! I really don't know where the time has gone. I will post some pictures of our partying, but in the meantime here are a few things about Seth at this age. Our lives would definitely not be as exciting, funny, messy, or filled with love without him. We love you Seth!
- At least three our four times a day Seth comes up to me and says, "I do lub you mom." Awww...that's a heart melter right there. I usually get a big bear hug too.
- Seth asks "why" a lot. Examples: Me: Seth, don't go #2 outside. Seth: Why? Me: Seth, don't stick knives in outlets. Seth: Why? You get the idea.
- Seth says, "that is awesome" when he's really pleased about something.
- Seth asks frequently, "Do you want a piece of me?"
- Seth loves swords, capes, riding his bike, jumping on the trampoline with the neighbors, watching movies, and playing in the tub to name a few.
- Seth loves basketball shorts. He does not love church clothes.
- Seth loves dogs, but he's not a big fan of earthworms.
- Seth loves to go fast on anything.
- Seth is very particular. For example, making chocolate milk must include drinking some of the white milk before chocolate is added, licking the spoon after stirring, and putting the cup lid on himself. If any of these steps are missed, he will let you know and know. He is incredibly stubborn.
- Seth loves to sit on your lap and read a book.
- Seth's smile lights up a room. He is a very affectionate kid. He loves his family, and we love him!

Soccer
Spring soccer is over, so I thought I'd post some (quite a lot actually) of the action. Overall, Luke had a lot of fun and played pretty well most of his games. With the exception of two Saturday games, he was pretty into it. He learned some important lessons about getting beat, not taking things too personally, and sticking with it. It was fun to watch him have fun with his teammates and actually improve his skills.
Two of his games were in absolute downpours. I managed to take a couple pics at this one before it got too wet. By the end all of the kids were drenched and freezing, but they seemed to have fun in the wet weather games.

As you can see Seth was pretty stoked about being a spectator in the rain.

This was at their only Friday night game. Luke's team started this game with three players. Both teams enjoyed the nice weather and struggled with focus.

Whose kid is that anyway?

Yes, I actually got a shot of him scoring a goal. I wish I could have got his face. I'm sure he had his tongue out in concentration. The other team was on the field somewhere. They don't have goalies at this age.

This one demonstrates Luke's size challenge--good thing that doesn't matter too much in soccer. Believe it or not, the little girl in the picture is in Luke's kindergarten class.

Luke is so fast when he tries to be. He usually just kind of gallops alongside the people with him, but when he decides to go he's got speed.

Go team! They were a cute little team...usually short on both players and focus, but they had fun. At almost every game there was a point where both teams were huddled around the ball kicking each other in the shins. Those shin guards are a necessity.

They were missing two of their players for the final game...including one who was supposed to bring the treats. Come on people--treats are critical at this age! They were all really tired when it was over. Some of them never subbed out. Their coach is a friend and neighbor and all the kids live by us, so it was a great group of parents. Good times.

Luke's last game was Saturday. Finally the weather was great, and I took a lot of pics. My photo class this week was about shutter speed, so I had the chance to take some action shots. He played awesome and ended the season on a great note with three goals.

Firsts
The last few weeks have been busy, but here are a few firsts for our family that happened the last month or so.
Bunkbeds!
We finally got rid of Seth's crib that he had been climbing out of forever and got the boys into bunk beds. My dad made them in his shop, and they are awesome.

We are now in need of a new dresser, but we're still using the drawers that went under Luke's old bed for clothes, and they are Ian's favorite play place.

Fun Run!
Our whole family participated in the fun run at Luke's school. It was a great morning. I ran the mile with Luke while pushing Seth and Ian. Jer ran the 5K. I had good intentions of having Luke train a little which I didn't follow through with, but it was no problem. It was a lot of fun.

Haircut!
Ian's baby mullet was getting too out of control (this picture does not do it justice), so I had my friend trim it up when the boys went for their haircuts. Goodbye Goldilocks.

Here's the new man. It did make him look older which kills me.

Zap!
This guy has been busy as usual. He gave me quite a surprise when he used a butter knife to pry a cord out of an outlet. Yep. Burnt cord end, burnt knife, blackened outlet cover, tripped breaker...but he was just fine.

Ian experienced his first ride in his grandpa's new Razor. He loved it.
I am actually taking a photo class and learning how to use my camera in manual mode...as in no auto shots. It is really fun, and I'm learning a lot. I'll have to post some more pics as I take some good ones. The weather outside has not been super cooperative for photography.

Today
I just posted about Ian's birthday so please scroll down to his pics...I don't want to steal his thunder. I thought I'd take a minute though to write down what today was like. Today wasn't particularly extraordinary, but it is a good example of what it's like to be the mom of little kids. I know most people reading this can relate. It seems hard to believe that at some point I might actually forget what these crazy years were like...and miss them (I know I will). Maybe years from now I will read this and remember the day to day craziness of being a mom right now. Maybe I will be able to share some humor with my daughters-in-law or whoever else I know that's at this point in their lives.
Okay here's a rundown of my day. After getting Luke to the bus stop, I rushed out the door with Seth and Ian to head in for Ian's check-up. Why did I take the 8:45 am appointment you ask? I don't know...because I am an idiot, a glutton for punishment, a slow learner...any of the above. I'm rushing in right about 8:45 when Seth needs to use the bathroom. (I know my stories always go here so I'll spare the details, but this sort of thing occupies a lot of my time right now.)
We got up to the desk but instead made a beeline for the bathroom. Luckily it has not been used yet, and it is only a one-holer. Seth says he needs to pee but while he's doing that begins to do something else. In his defense, his stomach has been a little off. I put Ian down on the bathroom floor, attempted to catch falling debris with toilet paper, and got him on the potty in the correct orientation. I then attempted to clean up (I was actually prepared with a clean pair of undies that have been in the bag for months). This included taking off all of Seth's bottoms, shoes, etc. while Ian is exploring the bathroom floor on his hands and knees. I swear no less than 10 minutes later we are all cleaned, washed, and ready to check in.
The start had been less than smooth, but I was still optimistic. That began fading after Ian took a header off of this carpet platform he climbed onto while I was paying and proceeded to scream. During the screaming, the receptionist handed me a marker and a developmental checklist to read through and fill out. Really? With what appendage would I accomplish that? So when they called his name two kids, clipboard, diaper bag, and I struggled into the office. Lots of waiting, tears, and four shots later we were good to go. I left with a runny-nosed, teary eyed Ian who was quickly tangling his sticky sucker in my hair and a curious Seth who would not leave the building until he had played with the big door opener button for what seemed like forever.
We had to stop and get groceries on the way home which actually went quite smoothly. Except for that part where Seth pushed our cart off by itself into the parking lot while I was putting Ian into the van. When I saw it (fully loaded still) it was picking up a good rate of speed heading for some parked cars. That is when I broke into full sprint and caught it just in the nick of time. When we got home I had Seth "helping" unload the groceries when I noticed he had disappeared for a few minutes. He turned up in the back of the van unwrapping and eating lots of newly purchased saltwater taffies. All I could do was smile when he looked up at me with a big smile and lots of drool running down his chin.
To be honest none of this really fazed me all that much. Life is always a bit chaotic, but at the same time mostly manageable with these munchkins. It's the days when I do let it faze me when things don't go well. I am slowly learning to relax more and react less. I do have great kids, and I love my time with them. We ended the day standing in pouring rain/gale force winds watching Luke's soccer game. That was actually one of those moments that makes all of the sometimes mundane stuff I do worth it. He is like night and day from fall soccer. He is such a hustler now and has scored lots of goals. One in particular was a big breakaway from everyone else and when he turned around and looked at me with that huge smile on his face--that's what it is all about. After we returned home like a bunch of drowned rats the kids had baths and dinner, and we read some books before bed. Seth and I got this dumb book at the library about a llama that is mad at his mama, but at the end he loves her. On that last page Seth put his chunky little arms around me and gave me a big squeeze. I am a truly blessed, and I don't want to ever forget it.
